Families Moving Forward

Families Moving Forward

Galatians 6:2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

The week of April 2-8 Brookwood will be partnering with Families Moving Forward to serve homeless families in our community! There are several ways you can get involved:

  • Provide supplies or a meal
  • Help onsite with hospitality and activities
  • Stay overnight

On Sunday, March 5 there will be a meeting in the cafeteria of West Junior High School following the 10:45 service, where you can learn about ways to help. Please email info@brookwood.net if you have any questions or are interested!

Families Moving Forward is a shelter program serving homeless families in Scott and Carver counties. Congregations in the area provide support by hosting families overnight for a week at a time. Families who are accepted into the program have the blessing of temporary shelter and meals. Parents work with staff advocates toward the goal to find stable housing within 60 days of arriving. The program has served 38 families in the last two years with 80% moving into stable housing.

So how does it all work? Families Moving Forward has a program center located at Shepherd of the Hill in Chaska. Families use the program center as a hub. They have storage space for personal belongings, a kitchen, laundry machines, computer access, a living room, children’s play area and a quiet room. Children are bussed to school and back to the center each day. Parents go to work, meet regularly with staff, search for housing and jobs, meet for financial literacy class, do laundry, make meals, and care for children. Each evening, families are bussed to the hosting congregation and picked up again the next morning.
So how can we host without a permanent site? Families Moving Forward has recently moved the program center into Shepherd of the Hill. Now they have the additional space available to serve as a central hosting location when necessary. This change provides the opportunity for us to demonstrate God’s love by hosting at the program center. Each evening we will be welcoming four families, providing meals, activities and friendship.
